The Cherokeean Herald newspaper celebrated its 157th birthday on Feb. 27

 "We are the oldest, continuously published weekly newspaper in Texas, and we have a Texas historical marker to commemorate this milestone," said Marie Whitehead, editor and owner. "Texas joined the United States in 1845, and this paper was founded in 1850 as the Cherokee Sentinel." The newspaper has been under its current ownership for 57 years.
