Daphne Session speaks at Black History program

Daphne Session, the first female African American to open a law practice in Cherokee County, was speaker for a special Black History program Feb. 21 at Rusk Junior High School. Ms. Session is a graduate of Rusk High School, Tyler Junior College and Sam Houston State University. She received her law degree from Texas Tech.

Ms. Session is the daughter of Walter and Maxine Session. She was introduced by Kathy Harris, seventh grade teacher.

Principal John Burkhalter gave the welcome. Kendricka Hart, Delesa Bradley Aisha Chee, Devonte Cook, Kanesha Jenkins and Jasmine Clements gave a PowerPoint presentation of African American poetry. A jazz saxophone solo was presented by assistant band director Mike Kellogg, Praise dancers from Mount Olive Baptist Church performed. They are Shawanda Session, Tranisha Hunter and Shaquita Cook.

A hymn solo was given in a capella by Jeremy Lavergne.

Coordinating teachers were Francetta McGowan, Denise Thompson, Tera Collins, D'Linda Mahaffey and Kathy Harris.
