GOOD SAMARITAN Board members met Jan. 9 for the regular bi-monthly meeting and election of new officers. After committee reports were made Kay Epperson was elected new president. Jo Abernathy will return as vicepresident; Boots Burfoot as secretary; Vera Smith, treasurer; and Dolly Loftin food purchaser. B.J. Nicholson is outgoing president. Board members expressed their appreciation for a "job well done." Mr. Nicholson was praised for his work as president and a number of board members commented on how he took his position seriously and was faithful and dedicated. He will continue to serve as a volunteer at the center. Appreciation is expressed to the area citizens who donated non-perishables during the various food drives in 2006. Also, the Good Samaritan is appreciative of the monetary gifts and donations of good, usable clothing and household items. The organization operates on the generosity of people who have the desire to help their neighbors in need. Rusk Cares distributes to eligible applicants who are residents of the school district and food is given according to family size, one time per month. Clothing may be purchased for 25 cents per item. Proceeds form these sales are used to pay utility bills and purchase food. Due to limited space in the building, clothing racks must be routinely "thinned" and these excess garments are hung under the open shed outside. These are free to the public. All are invited to go by and check it out. The Good Samaritan Center is located on Second Street, just off Barron Street, in Rusk. The center is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. The organization is sponsored by the Rusk Ministerial Alliance and is staffed totally by volunteers. |
