GARDEN CLUB Ollie Parrott spoke to the Rusk Garden Club Jan. 24 about the forests of East Texas. She gave a brief review of the many uses of wood and wood products, such as building materials of all kinds, furniture, firewood and toys. Before 1880 many forests were virtually uncut because of the difficulty in getting the trees to sawmills. By World War II more than two billion board feet of timber had been cut and hauled by the railroads to the mills. Today it is more economical to carry the logs by truck directly to the mills. This area still receives benefits of $2.5 billion from timber. Mrs. Parrott gave a blue bird house as a special prize which was won by Patti Davis. During the business meeting which followed, Dorothy Graham was elected treasurer. The Feb. 28 meeting will be held at First Baptist Church. |
