TSR may be declared endangered State Park
Preservation Texas to make announcement

An announcement was expected to be made on the steps of the State Capitol this morning that identifies the 12 most endangered historic places in Texas.

The identities of the sites were a closely guarded secret through press deadline for the Cherokeean Herald newspaper.

However, when newspaper editor Marie Whitehead was invited to attend the announcement in Austin, she said she had a curious feeling that the Texas State Railroad would be named on the list.

As a member of the TSR Operating Agency, Mrs. Whitehead has been an outspoken advocate for the tourist train, which will officially run out of money on Aug. 31.

"With the Legislature now in session, I hope the anticipated announcement will help shine a spotlight on the funding crisis facing the Texas State Railroad," she said.

"What legislator would want to be responsible for signing the death certificate for one of the 12 most endangered parks in Texas?" she asked.

The list of endangered historic sites is made annually by Preservation Texas, the nonprofit organization began compiling lists of endangered sites in 2004 to help call attention to places representing cultural heritage, geography, history and architecture of Texas.

"Preservation Texas was instrumental in initiating the effort to preserve Texas' historic courthouses," said Libby Buck, president.
