     Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kendrick of Nacogdoches announce the engagement of their daughter, Lauren Kay, to Clifton James Tierney of Bandera, son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Tierney of Bandera. The wedding will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at Grace Bible Church in Nacogdoches with the bride's grandfather, the Rev. Gene Kendrick officiating. Both the bride and groom are Stephen F. Austin State University graduates.

Rusk will celebrate Independence Day June 29-30
      The annual Rusk Independence Day celebration will begin with a gigantic veterans appreciation party from 7-10 p.m. Friday, June 29, at the Toyland Combat Vehicles Museum on CR 2407. Downtown activities are planned for Saturday. Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion will sponsor open house June 30 at the VFW Hall, U.S. Highway 69 South and Fourth Street.

      Sheriff's deputies nab would-be burglar Mark Steven Massie, 37, is being held without bond on Smith County parole and probation violations after the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department arrested him for the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, failure to identify fugitive from justice and burglary of a building.

Street repairs underway
     Rusk public works employees repave Fifth street in front of the post office and Cherokee Civic Theatre. City Manager Mike Murray said Fifth street was older, heavily traveled and about to break apart. Other high priority streets in Rusk's paving plan are East Sixth street, Needham Street and Abraham Street. The city will patch other streets as needed.

Modern use for public libraries discussed
      Evelyn Stewart introduced speaker, Ruth Mather, librarian of the Singletary Memorial Library, who presented the program on public libraries at the June 14 Lions Club meeting. Libraries have been part of the fabric of American life since the first municipally funded library opened in Boston in 1859. Rusk has had a library since 1902.

Volunteer appreciation
     Meals on Wheels hosted a volunteer appreciation day May 30 at First Presbyterian Church in Rusk. Tammy Carraway, coordinator for Cherokee County honored those attending. In front from left are Ms. Carraway and Boots Burfoot; second row, Bobbie Buck, Camille Jones and Ollie Parrott; third row, Linda and Glen Cotten, Dan West, Melva Hermes, Charley Burfoot, Peggy and Jackie Davis. Kay Robinson is not pictured. Other volunteers not attending were Glen Heidel, Vic Whadford, Ed Johnson, Darla Darby, Kenneth and Sarah Welch and Cathy Beathard. The volunteers deliver meals to homebound Rusk area residents. Footbridge Baker and the Daily Grind donated a cake for the event. Evelyn Lovelady celebrates 90th birthday with family
      Evelyn Lovelady celebrated her birthday with a family gathering at her home May 27. Mrs. Lovelady was 90-years-old on June 3. Her entire family was present to help her celebrate. There are three children, six grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren.
