Rusk, Jacksonville break with statewide trend, post lackluster sales during January
      Retail sales slipped in many Cherokee County cities when compared to the same period a year ago. Cuney's retail sales dropped almost 32 percent, followed by Rusk with a drop of 3.73 percent, Jacksonville, almost half of a percent. Increases were posted by Alto, 30.63 percent, New Summerfield, 5.97 percent and Wells, 48.34 percent.

Rusk PD receives federal homeland security grant
      Congressman Jeb Hensarling (TX- 05) has announced that $12,670 in federal funding will go to the Rusk Police Department as part of the Department of Homeland Security's Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP). "These dollars will help our law enforcement agents maximize their ability to respond to emergencies and protect the citizens of Rusk and Cherokee County," Hensarling said.

'Tumultuary' stumps Rusk's super speller

      Paige Penn's trip to the regional Dallas Morning News/ESPN spelling bee in Carrollton on March 17 was not in vain. The Rusk Junior High eighth-grader won third place in the bee. Rusk Junior High Principal John Burkhalter had nothing but praise for Paige's performance.

      The gift shop at the Texas State Railroad depot in Rusk offers the "I Love This Town" writing card series for resale. The four-card packs nostalgically picture some of Rusk's landmarks including the courthouse, the footbridge, confederate soldier statue and the Texas State Railroad train. County-wide clean-up day slated for April 21
      Cherokee County Commissioners have slated a county-wide clean-up day for Saturday, April 21. Dumpsters will be available at all four county barns and at the Cherokee County Airport from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sites will be monitored by county personnel.

Rotary Club golf tourney scheduled for April 14
      The Rusk Rotary Club's annual Memorial Golf Tournament, which benefits the Rotary Scholarship Fund, will be held Saturday, April 14, at the Birmingham Forest Golf Club in Rusk. As in the past, the format will be a four-person scramble, with handicaps totalling 48 or more; only one single digit player per team; and 20 being the highest counted handicap. Entry fee is $40 per person.

Men of Power event scheduled at West Union Faith Ministry
      Men of Power will attend a weekend event April 20-21 at the West Union Faith Ministry in Rusk. The church is located at Beale and Bradley Streets. The event will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 20, and conclude with a service beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 21.
